GOV. AURELIO
M. UMALI
Man For
All Season
Atty. Aurelio “Oyie”
M. Umali won over his political opponent that had been in power for the last
40 years. The election and the final count, though, were just icing in the
cake. Even before the election fever started, Novo Ecijanos had predicted
Oyie Umali’s victory during the recent polls basing their forecast on his
congressional win six years earlier where he handily won over his closest
rival, now Vice Governor Edward Joson.
For all his political successes, not many Novo Ecijanos truly know Governor
Aurelio “Oyie” Umali. He won twice as congressman with a mandate not ever
enjoyed by any congressmen before him. His debut in politics in 2001 where
he defeated Edward Joson is widely seen as a political phenomenon in Nueva
Ecija.
In Congress, he distinguished himself as one of the 30 outstanding new
congressional representatives of the 12th Congress on the basis of quality
and quantity of proposed bills; participation and attendance in plenary
sessions and committee deliberations; advocacies on issues that impact on
the daily lives of the Filipino people; and services rendered to his
congressional district.
He had been delegate for three consecutives years, 2001, 2002, and 2003 to
the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organization (AIPO) in Bangkok, Thailand;
Hanoi in Vietnam and Jakarta, Indonesia.
During the 13th Congress, on his second term as Congressman, now Gov. Oyie,
was a member of the powerful Commission on Appointments, Senior
Vice-Chairman on Telecommunications and member of the following committees:
Games and Amusement, Dangerous Drugs, Franchise, Justice, Tourism, Local
Government, Banks and Intermediaries, Ways and Means, Bases Conversion and
Higher Education.
He was also the Chairman of the Central Luzon Congressional Caucus and Party
Whip Representative of Lakas-CMD in Region III. He is currently the Chairman
of Lakas-CMD in Nueva Ecija.
Prior to his entry in politics in 2001, Gov. Oyie served as Deputy
Commissioner of the National Telecommunications Commission. Prior to that he
was Procurement and Sub-Contract Director of Lucent Technologies.
Gov. Umali obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree at San Beda College in
Manila. He has a Master in Business Administration from De La Salle
University.
He is married to Congresswoman Czarina Domingo Umali, fondly called Cong.
Cherry, with whom he has four kids Gabrielle Lois, Patricia Marie,
Allesandra Maxine and Anya Mikaela.
